Questions & answers about wasp nests
Sharon asked:
I have noticed wasps entering a corner of our house, we have no loft space, should I just ignore it or will they damage our roof lining?
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Sharon, if it is wasps, then they could damage felt or plastic barriers. Wasps are renowned for chewing their surroundings.
maurice asked:
Hi there, i recently moved into a 1st floor flat. I\'ve noticed during the day that on the outside a couple of wasps are going in and out underneath the windowsill on the outside(wood). in the evening and at night you can clearly hear a grinding noise. I haven\'t spotted any gaps in the window sill though. Could it be that the wasps are building a nest there?
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Maurice, if its just one or two wasps at this time of year, then yes it is entirely possible that they are building a nest in the cavity of the wall underneath the window sill. Monitor it for a week or so and take a look at the photos on this site to identify what they are, if there is a slow increase in numbers and they are a defined yellow, with small black stripes and do not appear furry, then its wasps.
maurice replied:
cheers Paul.....can it be possible that they \"eat\" all the way through the windowsill until they\'re inside the flat?
Ian asked:
I was working in the garden next to the house when I disturbed a solitary insect which I assume to be a wasp/bee. It was very quick and reacted very aggressively whenever I went close. The following day, and I do not exaggerate, but was stung and then harrassed by this insect which actually followed me some 6 or so yards to may back door and then followed inside. I think it came out of the brickwork, but cannot be certain. Any clues
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Ian, not much to go on there. Could be many different things. Probably a bumble bee.
Ian replied:
I never saw it, too small and quick. I can rule out the normal bees and wasps,
