Questions & answers about wasp nests
sandy asked:
I have an abandoned wadp nest,I keep it in my home as decoration, how can i remove dust from it without damaging the nest
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Sandy, that's an unusual one. I am not sure how you would go about cleaning a wasp nest. You could try blowing gentle air over it. You can buy pressurised cans of air which are generally used for airbrushing/delicate spraying. With the use of a pressure regulator, you could restrict the air flow, so it doesn't damage the nest.
CAL asked:
I HAVE A LARGE BIRD HOUSE. IT HAS 24 SECTIONS TO IT. ONE OF THE SECTIONS HAS A WASPS NEST INSIDE IT DO YOU HAVE any seggestion ON WHAT I COULD DO TO GET RID OF THE WASPS AND NOT HURT THE BIRDS. SPARROWS ARE THE TYPE OF BIRD
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Cal, contact your local pest controller try www.wasp-control.co.uk and explain the situation. A quick knockdown treatment could be done late in the evening which will kill all the wasps instantly.
Peter Woodruff asked:
We have a Wasp/Hornet nest in an unused bird nest box. Is it absolutely necessary that we \'get rid\' of them. Please note we don\'t usually like to interfere with wild life of any kind and certainly have no desire to treat them as pests unless they really are a danger in any way.
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Peter, it is entirely up to you if you want to have them nesting near you. The main problem comes when they become overly protective of their nest and start stinging. If the bird box is out of the way and not in an area which is used much then leave them alone. Any creature is only a pest when it is in the wrong location and comes into contact with people.
Peter Woodruff replied:
Thanks for your reply Paul. Its a small garden so not sure the are well away from us humans but based on your comments if we keep away from them I reckon we can live in peaceful and safe harmony.
