Questions & answers about wasp nests
Kim asked:
I have has three very large wasps in my loft since October, I have looked for a nest and cannot see one. However last summer I had wasps going in and out of brickwork above my window, so I blocked the hole and thought nothing more of it, could I have a nest in my wall cavity? Also I did have a a nest the previous year in my shed!
Paul Sweet replied:
Nests from last year will not be re-used. Queen wasps hibernate in all sorts of places such as loft spaces, sheds, wood piles etc.
kevin asked:
hi we have had small boar holes appear on the edge of our lawn and have witnessed singular wasp/bees going in and out of them , it started last year and this year we have twice as many have tried filling holes but they just reform within days could you tell what type of wasp/bee lives in the lawn and how to get rid of them please
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Kevin, Its mining bees. They are harmless, and you will not be stung by them as their stinger cannot penetrate human skin. Leave them alone.
Sally Wright asked:
Hi Paul, I think we have Masonary bees in the old part of our cottage holes are appearing in lines in between the stone work, also have found over 10 wasps/bees in our bedroom (all by one window)do bees have a special protection order on them? and or how can we control/ get rid of them? we also think we have a few dormant wasps nests in the loft could they be used again? could you please give us some sort of estimate? thanks
Paul Sweet replied:
Hi Sally, we do not treat any bees. If you have mason bees boring into the mortar of your cottage, you will need to get the mortar re-pointed, this will solve the problem. Don't worry about any old wasp nests in your loft; they will never be re-used. If you had an active wasp nest last year that was not treated early enough, you most probably had hibernating queens in your loft over winter; the chances are that will get a new nest this year. Keep your eyes peeled around mid-June, have a look at your roof from outside, constant activity in one area = active nest.
